Every Adult Deeper

As we've looked at what it might be that can be a simple but important statement to get across the importance of our mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world, we saw what Student Life's mission is - Every Student Deeper.

Not being folks that need to recreate the wheel, we thought this provided for us a message that resonates in the adult world as well.  It doesn't matter where you are in your current walk, we want to help you take the next step to a deeper faith.  Are you someone that just comes on Sunday morning?  That's great!  We hope you keep coming but we know that if all you do to grow in faith is spend that hour on Sunday, then you will shortchange yourself in learning who our God is.  We want to challenge you to take the next step.

Perhaps that is to come to one of our larger Sunday morning groups.  There you can either take a lead role or spend some time in the background - but you will be a part of a group that will help you go deeper.

Perhaps your step is to engage in a smaller group.  Grow Groups, Women's Studies, Men's Studies, and our core classes will provide you with this opportunity.  In a smaller group, there is more opportunity for personal connecting and fellowship takes on a different light as we support one another in our faith walks.

We have designs for the future that include even smaller groups - accountability groups and mentors - that will provide closer support, challenges, and connecting opportunities.

There is one thing that drives all of these thoughts and that is the model that Jesus gave us.  When He walked on the earth, He taught 'the multitudes' - they numbered in the thousands at times.  This is similar to what happens in worship on Sunday mornings here at Sugarloaf.  This is an important piece to our faith as each service is designed to deliver one message through the music, testimonies, prayer and teaching.  This is primarily a time when most folks look to receive from God though it requires engagement as well to truly grow.

Jesus also spent time with 'the crowd' - numbering in the hundreds.  This will be who our Community Groups are designed to reach out to.  As the numbers lessen, the ability to get to know one another increases and it is easier to make deeper connections with one another.

There were also 12 disciples that were with Jesus.  He did deeper teaching with them and they grew very close as they learned about faith together.  This is what we model our Grow Groups on.  In groups that are around 12 in number, very deep connecting often takes place and engagement in the lives of our brothers and sisters in Christ is strengthened through those relationships.

Even beyond the 12, Peter, James, and John were closer to Christ and listed as being a smaller group that  Jesus chose to confide in.  This will be the model of our future accountability groups.  These groups will be a powerful opportunity to build the kinds of relationships that stand through every trial and difficulty.  We look forward to their development over the next few years.

We figure if we model Christ, we will be okay in the long run!

So - it doesn't matter where you are right now, we have a place for you in moving closer to Christ and deepening your faith.  If you are unchurched, come and check us out here at Sugarloaf.  You can experience worship and teaching unnoticed (if you choose) among the multitude.  If you are part of the multitude but find that something seems to be missing, then take the next step for your faith-walk and join a group.  Whether it's a large group or small group is not as important as engaging with others in your journey.  If you're not sure where to plug in - contact me and I'll be glad to help you figure that out (mdevine@sugarloaf.org).

God asks us to play our part in reaching the world with the message of Christ...and we believe that in order to do so, we must be seeking Him out and growing in our faith regardless of how long or how short that faith-walk is.  Join us as we seek to make a difference - for Him!

Take your next step...

Welcome!

I was thinking the other day about my job at Sugarloaf United Methodist Church - I mean how cool is it that I get to be involved in seeking to enhance, encourage, and reach out to the hundreds of people that call SUMC home with the message that God - the Almighty One, Creator of all that is, Father - wants to be in a close relationship with each individual here?!?

Well - it's very cool, in case you're wondering.

I believe that God has a special calling on your life!
That God wants to be near to you in dramatic and exceptional ways!
That the love of Christ will help you walk through every moment of darkness and help you celebrate every moment of light in your life!

It is this love (and the grace that comes with it) that gets me jazzed about being here - excited to be a part of your walk with our Savior...as the song says, "There is none like You, no one else could fill my heart like You do; I could search for all eternity long...and find, there is none like You!"  There is none like Jesus and there is nothing like an on fire, all out life being lived for Christ!

As we go forward, my intention is to periodically write about what it means to follow Christ...and to get information out to you about groups and studies that we have here at SUMC.  For individual information on individual groups - there will be links from the website to those groups and you can check them out to find the place(s) that God would like you to journey to (or through) as you pursue a deeper, more fulfilling relationship with Him.

God's blessings to you!  Know that I am In It With You!
IIWY,
Mike

Screamfree

Screamfree Parenting

We don't like to watch our children make mistakes and we don't like having to take the time and energy to enforce the consequences. Instead, we scream, or we get anxious, or we stress out.  We may threaten, negotiate, and plead. We hope it works-meaning we hope our screaming or our anxiety forces them to behave the way we need them to.
When it doesn't? We scream or get more anxious...and then our screaming becomes the consequence itself. This isn't working and everyone knows it, but what else can you do?
In Screamfree Parenting, you learn to let go of the need to be the perfect parent with perfect techniques raising perfect kids.

Every couple goes through conflict. Not every couple grows through it. Be one of the few.

Hold on--this may not be the marriage class for you. It's not about fixing your communication, improving your compatibility, or helping you and your spouse meet each other's needs. It's not a step-by-step program for training your spouse, nor is it a recipe for a conflict-free relationship.

No, your marriage is far too important for any of that. It is the central relationship of your life, and it deserves to be addressed with the truth. And the truth is: Marriage is difficult. And it is naturally filled with conflict. It’s actually designed to be this way. What you need is not some typical program to help you avoid this conflict; you need a way to actually Calm Down, Grow Up, and Get Closer to your spouse through it.

That’s the premise, and the promise, of ScreamFree Marriage. Here you will find yourself challenging your previous notions about what your marriage should be and learning to appreciate all that it is right now, and all that it could be in the very near future.

If you want a comfortable relationship without conflict or challenge, choose another marriage class, but if you want an honest, intimate relationship that turns your common conflicts into a deeper, lifelong connection, then this may be the book for you.

FALL 2011 - FULLY DEVOTED!!  STARTING NEW SERIES!!! JOIN NOW!!!!

Fully Devoted: Living Each Day in Jesus' Name, Pursuing Spiritual Transformation
What does it mean to do everything "in Jesus’ name"? Is that an ideal attainable only by a few "super Christians"--or is it a way of life we can all experience? The goal of "Fully Devoted: Living Each Day In Jesus' Name" is to help you define spiritual life and then live it as Jesus would. The first book in the Pursuing Spiritual Transformation series, it introduces you to "The Five Gs" - a framework which embraces five key areas of the Christian life. This tool will help diagnose your spiritual condition and then prescribe the practices, experiences, and relationships you need to make progress. Subsequent studies explore one "G" per guide. You do not need to do the other books in any particular order, but we do recommend you do this book first to lay a foundation.
--------------------
Giving: Unlocking the Heart of Good Stewardship, Pursuing Spiritual Transformation
Jesus said more about money than just about any other topic. Clearly, it is an important issue - and a touchy one! Deep down, we know it is not a matter of what we earn but how we manage what we earn that shows our ultimate priorities. Giving demonstrates how good stewardship is more than a responsibility - it's an adventure. As you study the connection between your wallet and your heart, you'll learn how money management is a powerful tool for shaping your character. You'll discover how giving is as much a part of spiritual growth as prayer and Bible study. And you'll learn about the rewards of cultivating wise financial habits and a generous heart. Above all, you'll find out how a lifestyle of giving reflects the heart of God, who freely gives his best to you.
--------------------
Gifts: Learning a Lifestyle of Service, Pursuing Spiritual Transformation
Gifted - that's you! Uniquely equipped to help build up the body of Christ. As a follower of Jesus, serving others is an integral part of your identity and an important key to your personal growth. But how do you cultivate a servant's heart and your spiritual gifts in ways that build up your church, your family, your friends, and your world - without wiping you out in the process? Gifts guides you to the answers. Through personal study and small group interaction, this study will help you develop a passion to be used by God. You'll find out about your unique place in the body of Christ and how to surmount the obstacles that keep you from thriving. You'll discover the joy of serving with others - doing together what you cannot do alone. And you'll learn how to abide in Christ, experiencing a freshness and vitality that grow as you give!
----------------------
Grace: An Invitation to a New Way of Life, Pursuing Spiritual Transformation
Many Christians have an easier time being saved by grace than they do living in grace every day. But grace is at the center of the life God calls us to--and reflects the heart of the One who calls. These studies in Grace will help you make the connection between grace as a remote biblical concept and grace as a lifestyle--a reality you experience day in, day out. Through an unfolding study of Psalm 23, you’ll learn how God--our Good Shepherd--is for you, how he longs to walk with you through temptation, sorrow, and even deep regret. You’ll discover God’s desire to make his joy your joy. Throughout, you’ll learn how enduring, powerful, and life-affirming God’s work in your life can be—and rediscover why it’s called amazing grace.
------------------------
Groups: The Life-Giving Power of Community, Pursuing Spiritual Transformation
Community is God’s idea. Only in community can we know and be known, love and be loved, celebrate others and be celebrated by them. And only through close, transparent relationships can we be transformed as individuals. Groups invites you to enjoy the rewards--and embrace the risks--of community. Step by step, this study will challenge and encourage you to explore the amazing potential for growth found in authentic relationships. You’ll study the true nature of friendship. The power of paying attention. The path to intimacy. The encouragement of being for one another. You’ll learn what it means to live out these and other simple but vital truths for being all you are, giving all you’ve got, and receiving all you need as a member of God’s dynamic community, the church.
----------------------------
Growth: Everyday Training for Extraordinary Living, Pursuing Spiritual TransformationWhat would your life be like if Jesus lived it? Imagine the change you would experience in your thoughts, actions, and relationships. Think of the joy and freedom that could transform every area of your life. That’s exactly what God has in mind for you! You’ll find out how in Growth. Through personal study and small group interaction, this study sets you on a path to live out the character of Jesus in this world as only you can. It happens not by trying hard, but by training. By cultivating spiritual disciplines--Scripture meditation, prayer, solitude, endurance, loving others--you’ll discover the joy of being transformed by Christ and the freedom of living each day sustained by his power.

Friday Morning Women's Group

James: Mercy Triumphs
Beth Moore Study

James, Jesus' own brother, started out as a skeptic. See how one glimpse of the resurrected Savior turned an unbeliever into a disciple. Bible scholars compare James to the prophet Amos. In other ways, James more closely resembles the Book of Proverbs than any other New Testament book. Topics in this study include: joy, hardship, faith, reversal of fortunes for rich and poor, wisdom, gifts from above, single-mindedness, the dangers of the tongue, humility, and prayer.
